Rep. Margaret Doherty recaps spring activities

She represents District 35 in the Oregon Legislature

I hope this newsletter finds you well on your way to summer - if the rain ever stops!

I have been busy traveling around the district, meeting with constituents and local leaders.

I spent May 24-26 in Salem for legislative committee meetings, and while I was down there, we also received the most recent revenue update for the rest of the budget through July 2011.

The news was disappointing - a projected shortfall of more than $500 million.

In light of this I have been in communication with local school district leaders to ensure that our local schools are not too greatly impacted by the coming cuts.

Some are calling for the Legislature to call an emergency session, but I believe that is premature.

First, we must assess the scope of potential cuts, determine what aid may be coming from the federal government and ensure that we have a plan that makes sense for Oregon.

This news, however, does not mean that Oregon is not back on track.
